This June, let’s talk men’s health

4 min read

June is Men’s Health Month in Australia and this year we’re encouraging every man to take one small but important step: start the conversation.

Men’s Health Week runs from 15–21 June 2026, shining a light on the physical and mental wellbeing of men and boys across the country.¹ The statistics behind the campaign are sobering. Men are significantly more likely to delay seeking help, avoid medical appointments, and under report mental health struggles.² The result is higher rates of preventable illness and, tragically, one of the highest male suicide rates in the developed world.³

Yet despite this, many men still hesitate, waiting until a health issue becomes impossible to ignore before reaching out.⁴

This year’s theme is a call to change that.

The “she’ll be right” mentality is costing lives

For generations, Australian men have been conditioned to push through, stay silent, and handle it alone. It’s a cultural reflex, familiar, even comfortable but it comes at a serious cost. Mental health challenges, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other preventable conditions are disproportionately affecting men, in large part because they go undetected and untreated for too long.⁴⁵

The good news? Awareness is growing. More men are beginning to understand that seeking help isn’t a sign of weakness – it’s one of the most practical things you can do. And the infrastructure to support them is there, waiting to be used.

Your local pharmacy: A first step that doesn’t feel like a big deal

One of the most underutilised health resources for men is right there on the high street. Your pharmacist isn’t just there for prescriptions, they’re a trusted, accessible, and a confidential first point of contact for a wide range of health concerns: mental health and stress, heart health, sleep, nutrition, sexual health, preventive screening, and referrals to the right specialist.⁶ The list is longer than most men realise.

What makes pharmacies particularly powerful in the context of men’s health is their accessibility. No appointment needed. No referral required. Research shows that men often visit a pharmacy well before they ever see a GP, making pharmacists a critical early touchpoint who can spot warning signs, offer practical guidance, and connect men to further support when it’s needed.⁶⁷

Pharmacies are also increasingly set up to have these conversations properly, with an expansion of private consultation rooms and trained staff who understand that a quiet word with a pharmacist might be all it takes to get someone on the right path.⁸⁹

The barriers are real but so are the solutions

We know it’s not always easy to ask for help. Research shows that privacy, embarrassment and fear of judgement can be significant barriers preventing men from seeking health advice.¹⁰¹¹

But awareness of these barriers is exactly what’s driving change across community pharmacy. More pharmacies are actively working to create low-pressure, welcoming environments where men feel comfortable starting that conversation, whether it’s about something physical, something emotional, or something they’re not quite sure how to name yet.¹²

This men’s health month, we’re asking every man to do one thing

Book that overdue check-up. Ask that question you’ve been putting off for months. Talk to your pharmacist, not next week, not when things get worse, but now. The conversation might feel small. The impact it has could be anything but.

Men’s Health Week, 15–21 June 2026, is a reminder that looking after yourself isn’t selfish, and it isn’t weakness. It’s the kind of strength that actually counts, for you, and for the people who care about you.
